Bmw E46 Rear Subframe Failure

(Note: although this question is about an E46, I'm posting it in the E36 forum as well since it's my understanding that this problem started with the E36's and may have been more frequent in E36's) A nephew of mine has a 2000 328Ci which has experienced the rear subframe mount point failure problem. This is where the suspension subframe/differential carrier torque load creates cracks in and eventually tears out the floor section where the mount point(s) are located. We're doing some research on possible approaches and have contacted Mike Miller and Turner Motorsport who manufactures reinforcement kits for the rear floor subframe mount points. In addition, however, it would be very helpful to hear from any of you who may have experienced this failure as to how you dealt with it. Some of the questions that would be useful: 1. Were you succesful at getting BMW to address the problem? Did it take legal action or threat of legal action?

Did you repair the problem? What did it cost you? If yes to 2, who did the work for you? My nephew lives in LA right now so west coast references would be very helpful. If yes to 2, did you have the TMS reinforcing kit installed? If you didn't repair the problem what did you do?

Bmw E46 Rear Subframe Failure

Dying To Win Robert Pape Pdf Files. [/QUOTE said: I purchased an 03 325xi about 10 months ago and asked Mike Miller about this issue on the E46. He told me that he had never seen nor heard of the rear floor failure on an xi.

He did mention that BMW has been turning away from customers regarding this problem. BMW claims E36/E46's that are heavily modified (lowered, track cars) are the main and only reasons why this failure occurs. However, they do happen on cars that are not driven on the track, lowered, etc. Taking legal action against BMW will need the help of every E36/E46 owner who has had this problem showing proof that the car was never lowered, tracked, etc.

Bmw E46 Rear Subframe Failure

BMW e46 3 Series Rear Subframe Tearing. Some of the BMW e46 three-series have been on the road for over. One such problem is the rear subframe tearing.

To even get the ball rolling, I assume. Total BS on BMW's part. Resr Subframe Failure I have a 2000 323i with 116K miles. I live in DC so I'm constantly dealing with stop and go traffic and streets lined with pot-holes. I just recently in the last month or two realized the noise in the rear of my car which led me to discover that I now have this problem.

The mount is very close to ripping through the subframe. The sheet metal of the subframe already is ripped like crazy and everytime I need to go somewhere I hesitate to drive it. Unfortunately I have no other vehicle to drive so it just keeps getting worse. I've taken it to a few different shops to get estimates on the work and it looks like it's going to cost me between $800-$1500 to get it fixed (and that's if I purchase the E46 Rear Chassis Reinforcement Kit from turner motorsport).

Everyone I have asked told me to purchase the kit because it will save me a lot of $ in labor so that they don't have to fabricate the new plates. This makes sense however I still find it difficult to swallow the cost when clearly this is a fundamental problem that BMW is aware of. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get the repair done that may be cheaper or that they know does a great job?

If anyone wants to see the kit and the install instructions or a gallery of cars with the problem go to the following link: Thanks. Contact my brother James or anyone else at Road Race Technologies in Dulles. They have done this to the race cars they run, so they should be familiar with it. Don't exepect it to be too cheap, because you have to do all that disasembly just ot get to the problem.

Rrtservice.com Tell them Paul sent you. They may give you preferential treatment if you tell them you are a club member (I don't know because I am not affilitaed with their business.) And stop driving your car! You can only do more damage or end up stuffing the car as a result of total failure! I know you need a car in DC, but you need to keep breathing as well.

It should not hapen to a DD. This is a BMW problem, wife drives the car to work; thats all! Rear subframe kits are 140 +- from Turner,+ installation $1200 to $ 1500. Not worth it for a car w/ 170K. Now for free it's OK!Miles are not a factor if you own a BMW, it all depends on if your dedicated to your car or you want to give up on it and do you think you can do better with buying another E46? What IF you have the same problem and not even know about it 1500 is about how much the maintenance cost per year alone if not more$ i don't know about you but if i were in your shoes i would get the joog and get it reinforced for around $850 that's just me because i know a welder in my area who i already asked about if i ever encountered this problem because i myself are a good candidate on having my sub frame fail i have a 2000 328.' Knock on wood'.

Last edited by Freakshow; at 10:52 PM. I've call the body shop manager( Mr. Petrilo) and I'm still waitting for a answer. Vista BMW in Coconut Creek Fl.

They don't care about the customers. Many Phone calls 2 managers 1 collision cntr. Advisor, Caleb. They don't care.

All I want is BMW to look at the damaged and tell me if they are going to fix it or not! Thats because the ball is not in there court. The dealer has no say in the repair of this problem. They first inspect the problem, if you recieved a letter and got the car in when they were doing the subframe inspection then you got the repair. Now they have to inspect the vehicle, send information to bmwna which can take some time, the RTE will probably come to dealer on a scheduled visit (when he chooses) and discuss with shop and body shop how to procede, he then needs to get his manager above him to decide if bmw will pay for repair (which they should 100 percent) they will bicker back and forth for days if not weeks. This makes mechanics look bad, dealers look bad and bmw them selves look bad. I cant count how many times we can repair a car and get customer on his/her way but we are held up with this BMW politics crap they wana play, all it does is give our dealer a bad CSI score.

The customer is going to vent and even though the dealership did nothing wrong on there end, the customer will trash the dealer on csi because of this waiting and waiting and waiting for someone from BMW NA to answer a simple yes or no question. Keep calling customer relations.

Be polite but firm with them and keep calling. Good luck!!!!

It kills me that a frame(sub or otherwise) issue can be excused the way this has by a manufacturer. Aside from all of the other issues these cars seem to have (coolant systems, sunroofs, window regulators, leaking door/window/vapor seals) an issue concerning the actual structural integrity of the car??? C'mon.BMW, you know there's an issue, now own up and fix it!I wouldn't say they didn't own up, your just a little late. Besides its a $150 fix if you do it yourself. I'll look under my car one day and facepalm. But then ill fix it.
