This is a game where the playing area consists of small rectangular, square, parallelogram, or hexagonal graphic images, referred to as tiles. The objective of Blindfold Color Crush is to remove as many colored gems as possible, by swapping adjacent gems, to get 3 or more similar colored gems in a row. A single player can set the game to identify gems as color names, such as red or blue, or fruits, animals, or numbers.

There is a stock pile of 30 cards, 4 discard piles, and the 5 cards that each player holds. The deck consists of cards from 1 to 12. The game starts by players playing a 1 card and putting it into a build pile. Then if they have a 2 card, they play it, then a 3 card and so on, until they play a 12. The build pile is cleared off, and players start again if they can. If they cannot play a card, that player discards a card, and their opponent goes. There are other similar rules involved.

A player can play with up to 3 computer opponents. They may also change their skill level. The Vario 340 is designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. The Vario 340 is a 40-cell braille display for computer users for use with computers at home, work, or school. The transfer bench also eliminates the need for heavy lifting or awkward transfers. It fits over a standard commode for toileting. When attached to the adjustable tub rails, the seat rolls into the tub for bathing or showering.

The DuraGlide is equipped with 4 locking 5 inch casters, has swing-away arms and comes standard with a waterfall open front padded seat, safety belt and retractable footrest. The Easy-Level tub frame legs are infinitely adjustable. The Laser Pointer (Head Mounted) is designed for users with speech and mobility impairments, and users with limited movement as a way for them to communicate. The device works by enabling a person with limited movement to directly point to letters, words, and phrases on a communication board. The laser pointer uses a class 2 laser module (the lowest powered visible laser available), that is considered safe because the blink reflex will limit the exposure to no more than 0.25 seconds. The laser is mounted onto a tiny adjustable arm making it easy to adjust the beam of the laser up, down, left and right. This is important, because a person may be communicating in several different positions though out the course of the day. (If a person was using a conventional laser pointer, and tilted back in their chair, the laser beam would point at the ceiling).

Using an adjustable mount also means that the communication partner does not need to change the position of the board every time the laser user reclines or tilts back in their chair. A highly disabled (quadriplegic) person can fully control this kayak via a SIP & PUFF Switch! This design is a stand-alone fixture consisting of a Deck Plate that can be fastened to ANY kayak. Off each end of the plate is a pontoon, which rides above a fixed direction trolling motor. Each system has two pontoons and two trolling motors.

There is no need for a rudder or any mechanism to steer the trolling motors, as turning is accomplished by varying the speed of one or the other trolling motors. The Motor Control Program is entirely controlled by a single SIP & PUFF switch! The on-board Arduino Duemilanove Microcontroller puts the Motor Driver into Serial Input Control Mode and accepts Sip&Puff Switch inputs from the Rider. It then sends appropriate Serial Commands to the Motor Driver to operate the two Drive Motors. Split-second (0.1 - 0.6 seconds) Sips and Puffs control Left and Right Turning, respectively, and slightly longer (0.6 - 2.5 seconds) Sips & Puffs control REV and FWD movement. Even longer Sips and Puffs Stop the motors or command them equally to Full Speed.

Steering is accomplished via differential motor speed. Step 1: Advantages & Safety Features of the Design • No need to develop a directional control system as turning is accomplished by differential motor speed. An inexpensive single-board computer (eg. Arduino Duemilinove) drives the inputs of the motor drive circuitry. Functionality is easily modified as a S/W change. • Designed as a stand-alone assembly, it is designed for use on just about any kayak, particularly sit-on-tops. The user does not need to buy another kayak, or any at all if they can rent one.

The wing can be easily positioned in front of or behind the user. • The SIP&PUFF interface is fatigue free, and does not bring any electrical circuitry up to the user. All electrical and electronics components are contained in a (semi-)waterproof enclosure typically placed above the deck plate. Only the battery is separate, and can be positioned in front of or behind the rider. • The system incorporates an RC Remote Control override by which a safety observer can take full and precise control over the kayak in any case where the rider is unable to control it as required.

• All switches are debounced and timed in the software. Safety Features: • An RC Remote Control override capability. • A Lanyard Switch to detect the rider falling off without capsizing. • A toggle switch on the Control Unit to ensure motors off during boarding, etc. • A 'secret' system startup sequence and 'Practice Mode' to allow safe power-up. • A remotely-operated switch to electrically disconnect both motors in case of major system failure.

Step 2: The Safety Observer At any time, the Safety Observer can (turn on the RC Transmitter and) transmit a Full Throttle command which the Arduino detects via this Receiver Channel being connected directly to it. The Arduino then sends Serial commands to the Motor Driver to put it into RC Input Control Mode. The Safety Observer now has full direct control of the Motor Driver via the AILERON and ELEVATOR channels of the Receiver being connected directly to the RC Inputs of the Driver (in MIXED Mode). The kayak is now essentially a large robot.

If the Safety Observer decides to pass control back to the Rider, a Throttle Off command is Transmitted, or the transmitter is simply turned off. The Arduino detects this condition and sends Serial Input Control Mode Commands to the Motor Driver giving control of the Motor Driver back to the Rider via Sip&Puff inputs into the Arduino. Note that the Arduino controls the Motor Driver via Serial Commands Only. The Rudder Channel of the Receiver is reserved to actuate high-current switches, which will physically disconnect the Drive Motors from the Motor Driver. This FAIL-SAFE feature would only be used in the case of an unlikely catastrophic failure of the Motor Driver (they tend to fail to Full On).

The second photo below shows this feature of the Motor Controller. The switches are mounted in opposing directions so that actuating the servo situated between them causes both switches to move to the OFF (or ON) position at the same time.

Step 3: Parts and Assembly The author's total cost for this project so far, not including the Spectrum DX7 Transmitter, is around $1300, with the biggest expenses being: Motor Driver ($430), 2 Min Kota Trolling Motors ($240), Aluminum ($135), Battery ($90), and Charger ($60). Also: 32 LEDs, Various Cables, Connectors, Switches, and I.C.s ($175+), RC Receiver ($60), Cam Bolts ($40), Backup Arduino uController ($35), etc. The following files describe the system, and Hi-Res copies of the Images can be downloaded via the provided links: • SystemDiagram.gif is a complete diagram of the system, including Operator Panel, Motor Driver, and Motor circuitry. • SNPCTRL.EXE is a program, which accurately simulates interaction with the Control Unit, except that SIPS and PUFFS are simulated by pressing the CNTRL and ALT keys.

See 'The SNPCTRL.EXE Program' in the next step for more info! • SANDPSWITCH.GIF illustrates a typical SIP&PUFF switch. • OP-PANEL.GIF is a schematic diagram for the Operator Display Panel. Step 4: Details of the Design: The Mechanics: • Pontoons & Motors: The pontoons are constructed from waterproof closed-cell foam.

I used some rather rigid construction foam, but you can use the foam of an old boogie-board or similar waterproof foam. The pontoons are approximately 48 inches long, 9 inches wide, and 5-6 inches deep. In use, the pontoons draw less than an inch of water (not including the motors). Aluminum plates are bolted to the foam, top and bottom, with bolts running through the foam, to provide a sturdy base to attach the Motor Mount and Outrigger Pole Stantions to. The CAD drawing shows the Motor Mount separated from the Outrigger Pole Stantions by about 6 inches. In the final desigh, this dimension is reduced to about 3 inches.

The Motor Mount and Outrigger Pole Stantions are bolted to the upper Pontoon Plate from underneath with countersunk screws. The author bought the Minkota-30 trolling motors from Amazon.com for $117 each. The upper part of the down-shaft was removed before it was started. Only the larger gauge Red and Black wires were used for this project. A PWM (Pulse-Width-Modulated) drive system was used. The wires from the Speed Coil in the motors were cut, taped, and pushed back down into the down-shafts. • Outrigger Poles: The Outrigger Poles in the current design are made from 1-inch diameter galvanized steel electrical conduit ($6) bent on a conduit bending press.

In the next design update, there is a plan to make the Outrigger Pole as one piece that runs from one Pontoon all the way over to the other. The author will also try to make it out of aluminum pipe. In order to incorporate the Outrigger Pole as one piece, the Stantions of the Deck Plate will have to be modified to allow the Outrigger Pole to drop in from the top as opposed to the current design where the two poles slide in from the side. • The Deck Plate: The Deck Plate is made from a piece of 1/2 to 3/4 inch marine or exterior plywood, and is approximately 13 by 31 inches in size. In the current design, two aluminum plates are fastened to the plywood to facilitate mounting the Outrigger Stantions from underneath with countersunk screws.

My update will simply make this a single plate, in addition to modifying the Stantions to allow the Outrigger Pole to be droped in from above. All the Outrigger Pole Stantions are custom made braces slightly larger than the diameter of the Outrigger Poles, and utilize a bicycle seat Cam Bolt to squeez them tightly to the Outrigger Poles.

Slotted holes at the sides of the Deck Plate keep the mounting straps firmly in the desired location. These straps are ratchet style cargo tie-downs available at Freight Distributors or just about any home improvement store. Refer to the System Diagram and Operator Panel Schematic for most of the information required to put the electrical system together.

• The author used a VERY robust Motor Driver, the RS160D (~$430), from Robot-Solutions (www.Robot-Solutions.com). It was as if this driver was specifically designed for my project as it provided virtually every required functionality. In reality, the primary intended users are those guys that make the giant fighting robots.

• The Operator Panel was designed and built exactly to the criteria depicted in the schematic. The updated design adds two additional LEDs to indicate actuation of the Sip & Puff switch. All LEDs are from DigiKey (www.DigiKey.com), part #s: Red = SSI-LXR4815SRD, Green = SSI-LXR4815GD ($1.25 each).

• The Main Power Switch is available outside of the enclosure and concealed under a plastic film canister. The switch secures the lid of the film canister to the side of the enclosure and the tethered film canister is popped into place over the switch, effectively making it watertight. • Two DesignFlex, Inc. Pressure/Vacuum switches, available from Global Industrial Products were used for the Sip&Puff switch. The airline from the operator is Y-ed to 2 lines then one is connected to the High port of one switch (pressure = Puff) and the other is connected to the Low port of the other switch (vacuum = Sip). • A TTL to RS-232 Level Shifter board from SparkFun (SparkFun.com), part# PRT-08780 ($10) was used to interface between the Arduino and the Motor Driver, and, of course, the Arduino u-Controller itself, available from SparkFun with part# DEV-00666 ($34). • The Man Overboard Switch is a Magnetic Reed Switch from a home security system. The Switch side is secured to the inside of the Operator Panel to keep it out of the weather.

The Magnet side has a lanyard, which can be tied to the rider's life vest. • Aside from the Sip&Puff Straw (and Power Switch), the magnetic-reed MOB Switch is the only other physical input into the system. The system starts up in Practice Mode (motors will not run), and each time the Magnet is removed and replaced, the system toggles in and out of Practice Mode. Taking control of the system with the RC Transmitter will also take the system out of Practice Mode. The Software: The first Code segment below is the top of the State Machine Table, and the second Code segment is the entire operating loop! There are only a few other functions, one gets the Safety Startup Sequence, one monitors Fault and Man-Overboard conditions, and others control the LEDs and send Speed Commands to the Motor Driver. Referring to the Operator Panel Schematic, the following code sets the LEDs.

Step 5: The SNPCTRL.EXE Control System Simulator Program The SNPCTRL.EXE Control System Simulator Program allows a prospective rider to experiment with the operation of the Sip & Puff Motor Controller from the comfort of his or her computer desk. Sip & Puff Timing and Visual Feedback is virtually identical to the actual interface incorporated in the system. --Download and execute the SNPCTRL.EXE program. To download the Control Program, click on the SNPCTRL.EXE link, or type: www.DisabledAdventurers.com/SIPNPUFF/SNPCTRL.EXE into the Address Bar of Internet Explorer, press ENTER, select Run or Save. The program runs best in full-screen mode. Press CNTRL-ENTER to switch to full-screen mode. Pressing the CNTRL and ALT keys simulate a Sip and Puff into the system.

Enter the Safety Startup Sequence ( CNTRL-ALT-CNTRL-ALT) first! Press M to simulate Man-Overboard or Capsize. Press? for further Help in operating the Simulator. Press ESCto exit the program. Timing for the length of Sips and Puffs is very accurate in the simulator, and feedback on timing is given in the Switch Status (center-screen). In the future, the author hopes to build a second 'real' control system that can be used as a simulator for this purpose. I am in the process of designing a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) that will encompass all the electronic components, and nearly all of the electrical components, of the system.

Rules Implemented in the Code: Pressing M simulates Man-Overboard, Capsize, or Motor Overload. Very long (held) sips and puffs are simulated in this code. (See Actual Operating Code notes below) The maximum differential between the left and right motors is 7. Reverse motor speeds are limited to 5 (50% power). Hard turns slow the craft and move through turning on point. Changing speed when one motor is in reverse the other motor is in forward position, which causes both motors to stop until the next command is given.

When one motor is at stop, that motor waits for other motor to be at stop before proceeding in opposite direction with speed change command. In the Actual Operating Code: When ever both motors reach stop in very long speed change commands, the user must release the switch in order to issue further commands. For instance. The craft is set to fast forward and user holds a very long Sip: Both motors will decrease to stop and will not go into reverse until the user releases the Sip and then gives a further command. Step 6: Full Speed Ahead Top speed is just under 3.7 MPH, according to my GPS.

After 4 hours and 6.2+ miles, the motors were still running strong, producing ~3.3 MPH into the wind, and the main battery still showed 12.15 volts. The Motor Driver and Arduino Controller, as well as the Sip&Puff Interface, will continue to operate down to 5 volts.

Step 7: RC vs. Sip & Puff RC Remote Control Override capability is incorporated into this design mainly to allow a safety observer to assist the highly disabled rider who will be operating the kayak truly 'hands-free' via the Sip & Puff switch interface. It is, however, still possible that more able-bodied riders, and fishermen, for instance, may like to control the kayak, themselves via the RC Transmitter. Still, I have found that using the Sip & Puff interface is WAY more, “fatigue-free”.

In open spaces, long periods of travel are somewhat 'set and forget' and minor course changes, or corrections, are accomplished with the lightest (and shortest) of tiny sips and puffs against the straw. The caveat is that the RC Transmitter is a bit more intuitive and provides for extremely fine control of the kayak. With a few minutes of practice, though, a Sip & Puff rider can learn to, for instance, back the kayak precisely to the corner of a dock, or steer down a winding channel way of 10-15 feet in width. This activity teaches letter recognition in different fonts. The teacher prints in color and laminates it for a center or laminates the whole page and then cuts out the letters at the bottom. Can be stored in an envelope or baggie for use in word work centers. The teacher may also print in black and white to use as morning work, take-home or a fast finisher activity.

Step 4: The Electrical System • You will need an electrical system to motorize the walker. We used an electric system from an old electric scooter. Take apart electric scooter for the motor and electrical system.

• Document all parts (what they are and where they were). • Bench-test electrical system. • Make sure we re-wired everything correctly and everything is working. • Sketch schematic of electrical system. • This will be used later, when integrating the electric system with the walker. Step 5: The Walker • The standard, store bought walker will act as our frame and base for the project. • Take off all legs of the walker, replacing the back two with the front two.

• We did this so the back two legs have wheels attached and will be able to move/roll when the motor is on). • Create a long wooden platform for the walker legs to attach to the motor frame. • Drill holes for the legs to fit into. • Screw it into the motorframe.

• 3-D print plugs to fit the inside of the walker legs (make sure it is a snug fit). • Hammer these into the walker legs. • Place legs into the holes in the wooden platform. • Drill into the plugs from the bottom of the wooden platform, securing the walker to the motor frame. • 3D model a clamp and brace to create more support for the legs in SolidWorks.

• Attach and drill it into the wooden platform. Step 6: The Platform • The walker will need a platform that can be folded out of the way. This will be used when the user wants to take a break from using the walker normally, and wants to use the motorized function.

• Cut out a thick and stable piece of wood that will fit on the inside of the walker and is big enough to fit two feet onto. • Drill holes into the front of the wood plank for the hinges. • Drill holes into the motor frame for the other side of the hinges. • Drill holes on the back of the wood plank, enough for three wheels. • The wheels will be placed on the back corners and in the top-middle.

• Screw in the wheels and hinges. Step 7: The Electrical Box • We need a box to keep the batteries, battery charger, and electrical system all together and contained.

• Measure out five pieces of thin wood. • Nail it together, adding wood glue to any junctions for extra support.

• Screw it into the wooden platform on the motor frame. • Place batteries and electric system inside. • Create a cardboard cover to keep everything contained and tape it on top.

Step 8: The Control Panel/Dashboard • The control panel will be created in a dashboard style, making the user interface easy and simple. • Take note of all components needed on the control panel.

• Measure out dimensions and spacing. • 3D model the control panel in SolidWorks. • Use a laser cutter to cut the control panel out of acrylic. • Place all components into the control panel, and hook it up to the electrical system. • Drill holes for the brackets, and screw brackets into place on the walker.

Step 9: The Potentiometer Case • In order for the user to move forward on the walker (when using the motorized function), the user will need access to the potentiometer. • Measure the dimensions of the potentiometer.

• 3D model a case that molds to the right-hand handle of the walker, in SolidWorks. • 3D print the case. • Place the potentiometer into the case and drill it into the handle. • Hook up the potentiometer to the rest of the electrical system. Step 10: Wiring • Make sure all wiring is connected and in the right place.

• Double check using the electric wiring diagram. • Shorten and extend any wiring that needs it. • Zip-tie all wiring to the walker frame, out of the way. Step 11: Test it! There are a couple of small items to take care of but it works! The obvious next step is to take this concept to the next level and make the next version with a scratch-built frame and perhaps individually driven wheels to aid in steering.

It covers a broad range of light levels which span from sensing daylight through open windows to checking whether the indicator light is on for a WiFi router.

To use, permission to use the camera (first time only) must be accepted. Then, the blind or low vision user would point the phone towards a light source, listen, and feel as their phone changes tone and frequency of vibration while getting closer to the light. Only the light level at the center of the camera (directly perpendicular to the phone face) is measured.

Pointing the phone directly at the light source will get the highest reading. The user can rotate the device in landscape mode to activate the braille pad feature and start typing with their fingers. The creator participated in a 3 day event called TOM in which makers and people with disabilities have 72 hours to plan, design, and build solutions for a specific daily challenge the need knower has.The client is a 26 years old woman with severe Cerebral Palsy with very limited movement. She is able to move her left foot and some of her right hand fingers. The team created an assistive technology to enable her to be involved in scanning documents for archiving at work. The team wanted the user to be able to press a foot switch that would open the scanner lid and then press it again to close the scanner lid and automatically operate the scanning.

This was developed for the user to work in pairs; with a partner who puts the pages in each time for scanning. Step 1: Equipment • HP Scanjet 200 Flatbed Scanner • Orby Switch • Arduino Uno • Arduino 1.6.6 IDE • Servo - Hitec HS-805BB with a Four Point Mega Horn attached • Computer with scanner application • MDF, Plexiglass • Weights • Wires, breadboard, screws, wood glue, etc.

Step 2: Plan. Consulting with a mechanics engineer, the author decided to base the solution on the way a seesaw works. It was decided to extend the scanner lid and attach a weight to it to create a lever so that the center of balance (the fulcrum) would be right behind the scanner hinge. Then a servo engine would easily be able to tip the lid open and close. Step 3: Extending the Scanner Lid • Cut a sheet of plexiglass to fit the scanner lid and extend it by 8 cm at the back • Attach it to the original scanner lid. As a temporary solution we used simple office clips to attach it. There are much nicer fasteners you can use.

• We then added a metal cylinder at the end of plexiglass. You can calculate the exact weigh you need or you can just trial and error with different scrap metal to find the right one. It should be heavy enough to tip the lid open when you touch the plexiglass lid around 2 cm in from the back and light enough to tip the lid close when you touch the plexiglass lid around 6 cm in (counting from the end of the scanner in the direction of the front of the scanner). Step 4: Electronics. The author used an Arduino Uno to get an input from the foot switch, trigger the servo motor and when the lid is closed, activate the scanner application.

Using an Uno and not a Leonardo meant we weren’t able to activate a mouse click or a enter event on the computer with the scanner application. For more information on the hacking needed: NicoHood/HoodLoader2. Make arduino uno work like leonardo Step 5: 3D Printing the Rod Component. The final component we needed was the rod that actually pushed the lid back and forth. The team 3D printed a component that fits on the servo engine’s ‘four point mega horn’ attachment with a rod connected to one point. The original Solidworks file can be found of the author’s website. Step 6: Housing the Scanner.

In this solution, the scanner needed to be placed 6 cm higher than the table so we build a simple case with MDF spray-painted white. Inside the case we left room for the electronics to fit in. In addition, you need to build an MDF structure to hold the engine and keep it from moving around. Step 7: Putting it all together. • The motor with the rod component sits on the left side of the scanner, adjacent to the case.

The exact y position of the motor can be calculated or as we did, you can just move it back and forth a few millimeters each time, activate the engine and tweak it so that the rod reaches the right point at the back to make the lid open and then the right place somewhere in the middle of the lid to make it close. • Attach the engine housing including the engine without the rod component to the side of the scanner case. • Place the rest of the electronics within the case and secure them in place with screws or hot glue. • Put in the scanner with the extended lid and weight.

• Screw back the rod component on to the servo. • Activate the scanner application on the computer • Attach the foot switch. Step 8: Summary. The foot switch was attached to the wheelchair to allow the user to easily press and open and close the lid and see the scanner working. Author: IreteH.

The Sign Language Rings are designed to translate the hearing impaired’s sign language motions into voice. The device is intended to help hearing impaired users by translating voice into text which is displayed on top of the bracelet. The Rings are worn around the user’s fingers, and the bracelet is the display screen to view the text. These are wearable devices and come in a set of two objects- the rings and the bracelet. They are a collection of six rings that the hearing impaired person wears on the thumb, index finger and middle finger of each hand. The bracelet is worn on either wrist. The two come as a set and are of no use individually. The Device works when a person talks using sign language, these rings ‘comprehend’ the different movements made by the hands and communicate this information to the bracelet.

The bracelet then converts the sign language into words which are then heard from speakers embedded within the bracelet. These items can work vice versa as well. Meaning the bracelet ‘hears’ what the other person is saying and converts it into text that appears on the bracelet itself. The hearing impaired person can then just simply read what is written on the bracelet, thus making the communication circle complete. Features and advances include: Some of the sentences can also be pre-recorded within the bracelet. To pack them up and prevent them from getting lost while not in use, the rings can be fixed within the bracelet. Helps hearing impaired users gain self-confidence and live without dependence on interpreters.

The Walk’n’Chair is a folding wheeled walker with seat for people with lower extremity, mobility and walking disabilities. The Walk’n’Chair was designed primarily provide for stable navigation and travel over gravel, dirt and other rough surfaces and easier maneuverability up and down street curbs. It has four wheels; two large front wheels similar to manual wheelchair wheels and two rear casters with oversized tires. There are two hand brakes, one located on each of the handlebars, and each brake stops one of the large wheels. The brakes are lockable. The seat is located on the front of the frame between the large wheels.

With the hand brakes locked, the user can reposition the seat back frame and handles, insert optional footrests, converting the Walk’n’Chair to a wheeled chair once the brakes are unlocked. There is a collapsible metal accessory basket that can be expanded and attached to the seat back frame and used for carrying items. DIMENSIONS: The open width is 30 inches, and the folded width is 15 inches. The seat measures (DxW) 10 x 15 inches, and the seat to floor height is 21 inches. CAPACITY: 250 pounds. Nadine is a social companion robot that is designed to provide emotional support and companionship to the elderly, individuals with mental or cognitive disabilities, or anyone that would benefit from 24-hour companionship. Nadine is using a 3D camera and can detect and recognize people due to a binary pattern algorithm. Then she has a short time memory linked to her language database.

When we tell her something, she will analyse what is being said and link to the database, itself linked to the memory. She will dynamically augment her memory and database with the new facts and will answer taking into account of what she was said, what it means in terms of emotions, if she already met this person, and what this person said previously. She will then generate the right answer.

As words and sentences are linked to her emotional model, her voice intonation, her gestures and her reaction will depend of what was said, and what she had in memory. It is in fact a complex system. Nadine is able to monitor someone and speak different languages, including English, French, German, Chinese, and Italian. She can read stories, train people in languages, keep conversation going, play games, etc.
